Native American Heritage Month will kick off locally with a Nov. 1 presentation on sustainability from an indigenous science perspective by Pat McCabe, a member of the Dine (Navaho) Nation.
McCabe, Woman Stands Shining, of Taos, N.M., willl speak on “The Science of Right Relations and Sustainability” at 7 p.m in the Fine Arts Building Auditorium on NMC’s main campus. Tickets are $10 in advance and available at Oryana Natural Foods, or $15 at the door. Among the topics she will explore are:
- How indigenous peoples around the world have managed to live in one place for more than 1,000 years
- The crisis of relationship to place in modern, transient cultures
- How Ways of Knowing embraced by older cultures parallels the diversity that modern science says is key to healthy, thriving systems
McCabe was a presenter at the 2013 national Bioneers Conference and travels worldwide to share her teachings on how contemporary society struggling with sustainability can learn from indigenous experience. Her presentation is co-sponsored by the NMC Native American Student Association.
